I remember watching this game in a hotel room in Tennessee during a blizzard when I was in 3rd grade. My family went there for spring break, expecting better weather than Indiana and ended up being there for some record spring snowfall.
Since we couldn't go anywhere, my dad went next door to Dunkin' Donuts and the whole family sat in the hotel room watching the game. I've never been much of a sports fan, but even I got excited during that one.
I was in the Army stationed in Germany in 1987. I was on a two-week field exercise sitting in a hole looking out over the 1-Kilometer Zone between East and West Germany- keeping an eye out for the commie hordes.
I had a ground-line phone going back to our company HQ, called the Tactical Operations Cener. Our company communications clerk was from Fort Wayne and I was sure he was listening to the game on shortwave radio. I took a chance and cranked up the phone. A voice answered "TOC" (tactical ops center). "What's the score?" I wispered.
"WHAT?" was the reply. I asked again. "Report after your shift" My commanding officer had answered the phone.
