Football is a passion at Hamilton Heights High School. Wednesday, over 150 female football fans put their money and their minds to work for the Huskies at the first Ladies’ Night Out and Football 101 fundraiser.
The event combined shopping and football to back the orange with some much needed green.
“The Big Orange Club and our class representatives have gotten together, that’s our parent organization, to help offset costs for our football program,” said organizer Robin Mills.
Proceeds from ticket sales, a raffle as well as a portion of profits from 19 vendors offering clothes, jewelry, food and other items were donated to the athletic department.
Mills, who is also the Hamilton County Auditor knows a thing or two about finance.
“A lot of people don’t know or understand that athletics don’t get tax dollars,” she said. “So, all of our monies are due to gate receipts, concessions and things like that.”
The event was a great start to the season for Curt Trout who begins his first season as the Huskies’ head coach.
“They put together a fabulous event for us here tonight,” the grateful coach said.
After shopping, it was time to talk football. Trout presented a clinic on the rules and basic strategy of the game. The ladies were also treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the football program. Players and coaches demonstrated practice drills, weight training exercises and game skills.
The Champions Club was also on hand. The club is currently working to raise funds to expand locker rooms used by the football and baseball teams. Champions Club representative Carmelita Sherer said in addition to money, people willing to put in the effort to help the athletic department are needed.
“If anyone is interested, we meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m. here at the school,” Sherer said.
Organizers said they were pleased with the large and enthusiastic turnout. Mills said she expects the Ladies’ Night Out to become and annual event.
