Library volunteer Ben Smith re-shelves books in the juvenile section of the Noblesville Public Library. Volunteers like Smith help the library run smoothly and are always in high demand.

Volunteers are a welcome resource for any organization. At the Noblesville and Fishers branches of the Hamilton East Public Library, volunteers are always welcome and always in high demand.

From re-shelving books to preserving historic documents and even planning charity golf outings, there is a need for volunteers to lend their time and skills.

“What I try and do is tailor the volunteer to their interest,” said Becky Cola, volunteer coordinator for Hamilton East Public Library.

Jo Anne Vandergriff of Fishers is studying screenplay and novel writing. She found volunteering at the library put her close to the resources she needed for her studies.

“It’s ideal being here because I see a lot of books and research materials here I didn’t know existed,” she said.

Vandergriff began volunteering and June and was recently hired on as a paid staff member.

Volunteers can set their own schedules and work as much or as little as they like. Many choose to work in the Indiana Room at the Noblesville branch where books, documents and artifacts of Hoosier history are archived.

Elders from the Mormon Church volunteer to assist people interested genealogy trace their family trees. Others like Pat Perkins and Marie McGuire help preserve historical documents printed on rapidly deteriorating paper. They come to the library to photocopy page after page onto acid-free paper that will hold up longer over time.
